Ice Cream Shop Fan Encounter (2037)

The ice cream shop fan encounter occurred during Cal and Jess’s first in-person visit with Jae and the Lee family in late spring or early summer 2037. A young woman recognized Jae, asked for a photograph, and welcomed Cal when he spontaneously joined the frame with the Mufasa plush Jae had given him earlier in the outing. Cal repeatedly revisited the picture and its captured sound on the drive home.

The Ice Cream Stop

The families stopped at a local ice cream shop after a shopping outing. Nari noticed Jess preparing to mediate the counter interaction and quietly signaled for her to let Cal and Jae participate directly.

Jae ordered two scoops of mint chocolate chip, then correctly anticipated that Minh wanted strawberry with sprinkles. Minh laughed and blushed at the attention, and Cal laughed at their exchange while holding Mufasa, the large lion plush Jae had bought for him at the Disney Store.

An unnamed young woman approached after recognizing Jae from his piano work and documentary. She explained that her brother also had seizures and that watching Jae play had mattered to her, then asked for a photograph. Nari checked the request with Jae. He agreed and prepared for the picture while the fan crouched beside his wheelchair and her friend held the phone.

The Photograph

Before the picture was taken, Cal moved into the frame with Mufasa and leaned toward Jae. The woman startled, laughed, and asked, “Oh my gosh—hi! Want to be in the picture too?” The photograph captured Cal beaming with the lion, Jae laughing beside him, and the fan welcoming the interruption.

Jae swatted playfully at Cal and laughed hard enough that his words broke apart: “Caaal! Too big!” Cal remained in the picture, grinning. Jess’s first reaction was laughter; underneath it was the recognition that Cal and Jae were doing something ordinary friends did—interrupting a posed photograph, competing playfully for attention, and turning a formal fan interaction into a shared joke.

The Drive Home

Jess saved the photograph for Cal on his iPad. During the drive home, he opened it repeatedly, enlarged his own face and Jae’s, and replayed the captured “Oh my gosh!” He laughed at the same moment each time. Jae, drowsy beside him after the outing, opened his eyes long enough to murmur, “Caaal funny.”

Cal’s attention to the faces, sequence, and sound made clear that he was revisiting the encounter rather than merely responding to an isolated image. He pressed the iPad against his chest when he finished. The photograph remained a record of his first Maryland visit, his friendship with Jae, and the delight of being included without correction or embarrassment.
